'Underworld 5' Release Date & Update: Kate Beckinsale Returns With Theo James

Fans of the "Underworld" franchise will be delighted to know that after four years of hiatus, "Underworld: Awakening" is now getting a sequel. According to Slash Film, the Vampires and the Lycans are returning to the big screen soon as Sony has just announced that they have already started production on the fifth installment in the series which is speculated to be titled as "Underworld: Next Generation."

The fifth movie is expected to be as thrilling and chilling as the previous films since series star Kate Beckinsale is returning to the franchise to reprise her role as the vampire Selene. She has been playing the fictional character since the first movie which debuted in 2003. She will be joined by "Divergent" star Theo James who is also a comeback cast. He played the role of David, Selene's vampiric ally in the 2012 "Underworld: Awakening."

Another actor who will reprise his role in the upcoming film is "Game of Thrones" star Charles Dance, who played Thomas, the vampire elder and David's dad. New faces will also grace the show including Lara Pulver who is confirmed to play a new vampire character, Tobias Menzies from "Outlander" who will portray a new Lycan leader, and James Faulkner whose role is not yet detailed. Reports also say that Bradley James and Peter Andersson are part of the cast.

Polygon reported that the film will be under the direction of Anna Foerster who will work alongside former director Len Wiseman who is now the executive producer. Cory Goodman, who is known for his work with "The Last Witch Hunter," will write the feature.

As noted in Metro UK, the movie is filming in and around Prague for ten weeks. The plot is kept under wraps but there are rumors saying that James will be getting more of the spotlight in the fifth film. This is in line with another report that said that his character might become the main protagonist in the next "Underworld" movies.

"Underworld 5" is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Oct. 21, 2016.
