What Does It Mean to Be Humble?

. . . God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. James 4:6

It's hard to believe! Jesus was with His disciples. Read what happened: "so he [Jesus] got up from the meal . . . and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel . . ." (John 13: 4-5).

Jesus, God the Son, washing feet! People wore sandals. Roads were very dusty. When anyone came to visit, a servant had to wash feet. Was this a great job? No! Did servants like to do it? No! Did someone ask Jesus to wash feet? No!

Jesus chose to do this job to show He was not too proud to be a servant. Jesus had a humble heart. A humble person cares more about others than he cares about himself. He does not have a problem with pride. To be humble, like Jesus, you must be willing to help someone who has a need. Even if no one says "Thanks!" or "Great job!" Even if no one notices you. It's hard! We want people to praise us and give us prizes.

God will help you. Look for ways to serve others. Don't expect everyone to pay attention to you. Follow the example of Jesus.
