What person or what incident caused you to think that God doesn't love you? Who mistreated you? What happened? We can't change the past, but we can choose to think straight today.
Here is what that means for your life. Regardless of your past, God loves you. Regardless of your experiences, God loves you. Regardless of your failures, God loves you. Regardless of your disappointments, God loves you. He has always loved you, and His love for you is unconditional.
If you would begin to soak in that reality, what a difference it would make. Just soak in it. Let it get inside you. Let it start to flow within you. "God is love." "He loves me." "He wants a relationship with me." Really, He does.
So why don't you believe He loves you? What did you do that makes you think you can't be forgiven? Or what did someone else do that makes you think God is out to get you? If you are blaming God for something, you wouldn't be the first person to respond that way. And you won't be the last. But God is bigger than you think. He can handle your feelings. He just wants you to trust Him, even though you still have lots of unanswered questions.
Will you? Trust Him, that is. Will you let go of your hurt, or fear, or anger, or whatever else may be leading you to keep God at arm's length? You need what we all need. You need an infusion of God's love. That's the ticket. That's the answer. That will change your outlook and your inner quandary.
Just think back to a time before you started to have a bit of an attitude toward God. Who gave you that attitude? Your parents? A professing Christian? A professor? Who was it? And why do you put more stock in that person's opinion than in the love of the One who created you? Listen to Him. He will speak to you right now through His Word. He wants you to know that He loves you.
He loves you so much He sent His only Son to be your eternal Savior and Friend. Would you like to have God as your friend? Or is your heart so hardened toward Him that such a thought is repulsive to you? Again I must ask: Who got to you? Who made you feel the way you do about God?
"I made myself feel that way Dan. Me and only me. No one else. I have come to my own conclusions about God." OK. That is fair. You have made your own conclusions. But why do you trust yourself more than you trust your Creator? The last time I checked, no human being has been able to create a planet, or a universe. Those are some impressive credentials.
I would rather trust the One who made this universe than place trust in myself. I guess we all have to choose who we are going to trust.
Speaking of trust, what makes you and your opinions so trustworthy that you are willing to stake your soul on your opinions? That is a lot of faith in yourself. Are you really able to deliver everything you are trusting yourself to deliver? Are you really that pure, and perfect, and completely trustworthy? If others cannot place 100% trust in you, why would you choose to trust yourself that much? After all, you know better than anyone how imperfect you can be. We all know that about ourselves, at least if we are being honest about it.
Enough about us. What about God? What about His love for you? You can ignore it. You can reject it. You can deny it. But you can't make Him stop loving you. And why would you want Him to stop anyway?
All of us tend to make a mess of our spiritual lives if we try to figure it out on our own. The only hope we have is God's Word. It is there that we find out how much He loves us. It is there that we see Christ and what He has done for us. He died for your sins on the cross. Can you name one other person who loves you that much?
All that remains is for you to believe it, and then soak in it. You can drip in doubt, or you can drip in the living water of God's love. Which of those two options are you experiencing today? If it's the former rather than the latter, are you ready to stop doubting and believe? Or would you rather continue believing things about God which simply are not true?
You might be amazed at how many people make that debilitating choice. They talk themselves out of coming to the Lord and belonging to His family. What a pity. The river of God's love has more than enough water for everyone who would like to get in it. Go ahead. Jump in. It will change your entire perspective about God.
