Thomas Porter, a composer and music professor who serves as chair of music at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota, wrote “Let us be Bread.”
The song was part of an uptick in the creation of sacred music in the Roman Catholic Church following the conclusion of the 1960s Second Vatican Council.

“This refrain-style liturgical song weaves together themes of Eucharist, Paschal Mystery, and mission,” wrote David Anderson, editor-at-large at GIA Publications, Inc., which specializes in sacred music.
“The four stanzas draw from the feeding narratives, and the Bread of Life and Last Supper discourses in the Gospel of John.”
