4. McCarthy agrees to establish a committee to investigate government agencies
Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C., one of the original holdouts who declined to support McCarthy for speaker on multiple ballots, announced on Twitter Thursday that “we will have a powerful Church-style committee to go after the weaponization of the federal government — the FBI, DOJ, DHS, and all the rest.” The calls for creating such a committee stem from concerns about the politicization of the federal government’s intelligence agencies.

Members of Congress have laid out their concerns about actions taken by federal law enforcement agencies, specifically expressing outrage that the FBI used a SWAT team to arrest pro-life activist Mark Houck while taking few steps to address the targeting of pro-life pregnancy centers and churches following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization declaring that the U.S. Constitution did not contain a right to abortion.
More recent concerns have centered on the Twitter Files’ revelation that federal law enforcement agencies collaborated with the social media company to censor Americans. Bishop’s use of the phrase “Church-style committee” refers to the committee established by then-Sen. Frank Church, D-Idaho, to investigate allegations of intelligence agencies spying on Americans.
