'American Crime Story' Season 1 News, Spoilers: Stars Dish on Marcia Clark-Chris Darden Relationship Rumors

Were O.J. Simpson murder trial prosecutors Marcia Clark and Christopher Darden ever an item?

Though neither Clark nor Darden has ever confirmed that he/she was romantically involved with the other during and/or after the infamous 1995 trial, the actors who portray the two in the critically acclaimed first season of "American Crime Story," subtitled "The People v. O.J. Simpson," say that they have their own theories about what really happened.

"American Horror Story" actress Sarah Paulson, who plays Clark in the series, and "The Suspect" actor Sterling K. Brown, who plays Darden, recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about their take on the persistent Clark-Darden romance rumors.

According to Brown, the two prosecutors could have had some sort of "agreement" about sharing the true nature of their relationship.

"They have been coy for over 20 years," the actor told ET at a screening for the series' final episode. "[Darden] talks about it in his book, 'In Contempt.'"

"When it comes to actually, 'Did they do the do?', he leaves that unsaid. So, you know, I think it is just the agreement that they came up with between the two of them," Brown explained.

"We never had any confirmation from either one of them, so ... if we didn't have any direct concrete proof, we were not going to actually give it to the audience as if it were fact," Paulson said.

According to the actress, though "American Crime Story" does not portray the relationship between the two lawyers as anything other than friendly and professional, many viewers "imbue" the episodes with what they hope is true. In addition, she and Brown have such good chemistry on-screen that it's not hard to imagine that there's more going on between their characters.

In the final episode of "American Crime Story," titled "The Verdict," closing statements will be heard and the jury will reveal its verdict.

"American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson" airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
