Apple will reportedly unveil a revamped version of its music streaming service Apple Music in June to make it more attractive to consumers. But before, the company is currently offering discounts to students.
In an effort to increase subscribers, Apple has rolled out an Apple Music student plan, which will provide 50 percent discount to those enrolled in an eligible college or university, TechCrunch reports. The discounts are available for customers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Denmark, and Ireland.
In the US, Apple Music costs $9.99, but for those under the new student membership, the service will now set them back only $4.99 per month. The service might be priced differently in other countries but all markets will slash half the standard subscription price for students.
The discount is valid for all students, even those enrolled in a Master's program, and will be available for up to four years following sign-up. The four-year period doesn't have to be continuous, so those taking breaks can resume membership once they return to school.
The report did not provide the criteria or list of eligible schools, although it did say that Apple will be using UNiDAYS, a student verification technology provider, to make sure those signing up under the plan are really enrolled at a supported school.
Apple Music makeover
Apple's streaming service will be getting a new interface that's more intuitive to use, "people familiar with the product" told Bloomberg. The sources said further that the company plans to "better integrate its streaming and download business and expand its online radio service." The new Apple Music is said to be revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
Apple Music was launched in June 2015 and faced mixed reviews. It was praised for its music catalog but criticized for a cluttered and confusing user interface. The streaming service has also struggled with glitches like the recent complaints regarding songs disappearing from a user's hard drives.
