Beyonce Defends Herself Against Critics Of 'Bow Down'

Beyonce is revealing why she released the song "Bow Down/I Been On" that was controversial for its reference to women.

Beyonce, the 32-year-old singer who recently released her self-titled fifth album, caused some controversy last March when she released the song that was filled with more expletives than the singer's fans are used to hearing from the Houston, Texas native.

"I took my time to live my life but don't think I'm just his little wife / Don't get it twisted, get it twisted / This is my s---," Knowles sings.

The chorus of the song follows up with the singer spouting expletives at her critics.

"Bow down, b------," Knowles sings repeatedly.

While Beyonce was publicly chastised for the record by the likes of people like her fellow singer Keyshia Cole, the former explained her reason for recording the song.

"The reason I put down out 'Bow Down' is I woke up, I went to the studio, I had a chant in my head, it was aggressive, it was angry, it wasn't the Beyonce that wakes up every morning. It was the Beyonce that was angry," Beyonce told iTunes Radio recently. "It was the Beyonce that felt the need to defend herself. And if the song never comes out…ok! I said it!"

After listening to the record, Beyonce decided that the world was ready to hear it.

"(I) listened to it after I finished, and I said 'This is hot! I'ma put it out,'" she said of her initial thoughts on the song's release. "I'm not going to sell it. I'm just going to put it out. If people like it, great. If they don't, they don't."

The singer's comments come after Cole took to her Twitter to speak out about her peer's lyrics after the song was released last March.

"First 'women need to stick together' now b------ bow. Smh," Cole tweeted. "But when I speak my mind its a prob. #Well #StayMad...Can't stand when people all self righteous when it's convenient it makes them look good."

However, Beyonce is letting people know why she decided to take a borderline disrespectful route to release her message.

"I won't do it everyday because that's not who I am. But I feel strong," Beyonce told iTunes Radio. "And anyone that says, 'Oh that is disrespectful.' Just imagine the person that hates you. Imagine a person that doesn't believe in you."

She challenged people to listen to the song again with a new mindset by saying, "...look in the mirror and say 'Bow down (expletive)' and I guarantee you feel gangsta! So listen to the song in that point of view again if you didn't like it before."
