Boxing News 2016: Golden Boy VP Says Golovkin Avoided To Fight Andre Ward AT 168 Pounds

The Vice President for Golden Boy Promotions Eric Gomez recently revealed that current middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin purportedly turned down a fight against former lineal 160-pound champion Andre Ward.

"GGG" was once again victorious over the weekend, when he finished former then undefeated American fighter Dominic Wade within two rounds during their Saturday night fight at the Forum in California. With the win, the 34-year old Golovkin now improves to a record of 35-0, with 32 wins by knockout.

He is now waiting on the upcoming middleweight title fight between WBC world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, as he faces former world champion Amir Khan on May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. As the WBC interim middleweight champion, Golovkin is the organization's mandatory challenger.

In a report by Boxingscene, it was stated that one of the major issues of the making of the fight between Alvarez and Golovkin is the weight. A natural light middleweight at 152-pounds, the Mexican boxing sensation has previously stipulated that should a fight between him and Golovkin happen, it must be at 155-pounds.

Golovkin, for his part, insists that the fight should be at 160-pounds. But according to Gomez, who promotes Alvarez, Golovkin himself wanted out of the weight agreement when the latter was supposedly in negotiations for a fight against Andre Ward.

Gomez says Ward's camp wanted the fight at 168-pounds, but "GGG" wanted the fight at 164-pounds.

"Team Golovkin is asking Canelo to move up to another weight class to face him, yet they didn't accept moving up one weight class to face Andre Ward," Gomez said. "We are fully engaged and concentrated on May 7. If [Canelo] is successful, we will then sit down as a team and discuss all options."

Ward and Golovkin have been paired to face each other for a while now. Retired undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. even stipulated that in order for him to fight Golovkin, the Kazakh superstar must call out and fight Ward first.
