Boxing News 2016: Golovkin's Coach Believes Alvarez's Refusal to Fight 'GGG' May Cause Mexican Fans to 'Turn on Him'

One of the future 'super fights' that is being presently prepared is a middleweight clash between WBC world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and interim WBC champion Gennady Golovkin.

"GGG", who handily defeated American fighter Dominic Wade on Saturday night via second round stoppage, is now awaiting the winner of the May 7th title fight between Alvarez and former world champion Amir Khan at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The said fight is slated to take place at a 155-pound catchweight. As the mandatory challenger to the WBC 160-pound title, the organization has ordered Alvarez to face Golovkin, otherwise, he loses the belt, and the latter will be deemed new undisputed champion.

"If Canelo beats Khan, and does not meet his obligation to face Golovkin, then the WBC will have no choice but to strip Canelo of his belt," said WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman in a Boxingscene report. "This is stipulated in the rules, and this is how we will act."

But for Golovkin's head trainer Abel Sanchez, the repercussions against Alvarez seem to be bigger. In another report by Boxingscene, Sanchez says while he believes Alvarez is not scared of Golovkin, the 25-year old Mexican boxing sensation may lose his supporters if he chooses not to face Golovkin.

"As a Mexican who knows the history of Mexican boxing, they expect something from their hero," Sanchez said. "They expect something from Canelo. If he doesn't deliver, there will be repercussions. They'll turn on him, and he'll pay for it one way or another."

For his part, Alvarez remains undaunted with both Golovkin and Sanchez's remarks, lambasting the Kazakh superstar for "facing a fighter like Wade."

"I don't really pay attention," Alvarez said. "But after his (Golovkin's) performance on Saturday, and the kind of opponent he had – it's less of importance. At 25 years old, I've faced so many world champions and ex-world champions."

Alvarez then went to say that Sanchez's statement "has no merit", once again attacking Wade as a quality of opponent for Golovkin.
