Despite some unimpressive losses, they have managed to gain victories over the No. 1 overall tournament seeds Villanova, and that was enough to impress the NCAA Tournament committee to grant them a strong seeding.

Butler coach Chris Holtmann has said ahead of the start of the tournament: "It just reminds me of how grateful we are to be part of a program to play in this thing. And hopefully we can extend this season."

Winthrop, meanwhile, are in their first NCAA Tournament since 2010, and they ended the regular season with a 26-6 record. In 2017 though they are an impressive 17-2 and are in excellent form - both the losses they suffered came in overtime. However, they will have to be right at the top of their game if they are to take down one of the top teams in the tournament in the Butler Bulldogs.
