Canelo Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin: Oscar De La Hoya Contacts GGG's Promoter Tom Loeffler for Negotiations; Khan Predicts GGG to Win

After Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's victory over Amir Khan on Saturday night where he retained his WBC middleweight title, he is now being set up to finally face interim champion Gennady Golovkin.

The 25-year-old Mexican boxing sensation stopped Khan via a sixth round knockout, per CBS Sports, opening up the fight against "GGG,"the WBC's mandatory challenger. With the Alvarez-Khan fight now in the books, promoters of both fighters have begun the initial steps of negotiation.

In a report by Steve Kim for Boxingscene, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions who represents Golovkin confirmed that he already spoke with Golden Boy Promotions chief Oscar De La Hoya, who represents Alvarez.

"I spoke with Oscar yesterday and we've scheduled to talk again tomorrow and I think with all the attention both from the fans and the media on the fight, a unification fight between 'Canelo' and Gennady," Loeffler said. "It's really dominating the sports news and clearly the biggest fight in the sport of boxing."

Loeffler, however, also clarified that the conversation was merely an "introductory call", also noting their "good relationship" as far as business goes, with De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions.

The report adds that should a deal between Alvarez and Golovkin fail to materialize, the fight will be going to a purse bid, in favor of Alvarez on a 55-45 split.

Meanwhile, Amir Khan believes that Golovkin would come out victorious in his much awaited fight against Alvarez. Both fighters are known to have the knockout power, but Golovkin's undefeated record (35-0, 32 of which by knockout) gives him a slight edge among fans.

But for Khan, the Kazakh fighter has the advantage, as far as boxing skills go.

"Will Canelo beat Golovkin? Canelo's boxing skills aren't as good and for me Golovkin edges it and is physically a big guy as well," Khan said in another Boxingscene report. "Canelo should fight someone his own weight, and let's see if that happens."
