Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin Fight News: Oscar De La Hoya Plans For Bout To Happen At Dallas Cowboys Stadium
Six-division world champion and boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya has grand plans for the long-awaited super fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and knockout artist Gennady Golovkin.
Golovkin, who is also the IBF, WBA (Super), and IBO 160-pound champion, holds the WBC interim middleweight title, which makes him the mandatory challenger to Alvarez's belt. The Alvarez-Golovkin match-up has been talked about since early 2015, but grew louder after Canelo won the world middleweight titles over Miguel Cotto in November.
However, both men have other upcoming assignments: Alvarez faces Manny Pacquiao's ex-sparring partner, former world champion Amir Khan, on May 7th at the newly constructed T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Golovkin, on the other hand, will be facing fellow undefeated fighter Dominic Wade on April 23rd at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
In a report by Edward Chaykovsky for Boxingscene, De La Hoya recently had a meeting with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, and confirmed that there were talks about holding the said fight between Alvarez and Golovkin at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, more popularly known as the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The said arena can hold 80,000 people.
It has previously held other major boxing matches, particularly two Manny Pacquiao fights: against Joshua Clottey in March 2010, and against Antonio Margarito in November of the same year. According to De La Hoya, while he is certain that the mega fight will happen, the only question is the date.
"[Golovkin] is a possibility [for AT&T Stadium], obviously it came up," De La Hoya said, according to the L.A. Times. "Is he going to fight him? Absolutely, that's no issue whatsoever. But the question is when."
"Our thoughts are that the fight is eventually going to happen," he added.
De La Hoya adds that they are trying to build the Alvarez-Golovkin fight as the next super fight, noting that they are planning for it to surpass the May 2nd 2015 fight beween Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
