Chris Hemsworth Joins Female-Led 'Ghostbusters' Movie Cast

The upcoming female-led "Ghostbusters" movie just got a big boost. The movie has signed up heartthrob actor Chris Hemsworth to be part of the cast.

The movie's director, Paul Feig, took to Twitter to announce the big news and give fans a hint on the role that Hemsworth will play in the movie. His post included a photo of Hemsworth with the caption: "Our receptionist. #whoyougonnacall."

Feig most recently directed the action-comedy "Spy" starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law and Jason Statham, which debuted at no. 1 in the U.S. box office. The director is also said to have co-written the script with Katie Dippold.

Hemsworth joins other cast members which includes Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Based on Feig's tweet, he will likely play the receptionist for the female Ghostbusting team. According to Variety, Hemsworth was approached early on for a role in the film, but at that time, he passed up because the role was "too small." Insiders at Sony said that they revised the script in order to beef up the role and sent it back to the actor for reconsideration.

The actor is known for his action roles in "Thor," "The Avengers" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" but he is said to be wanting to expand his roles to comedies. He is set to appear in a reboot of the comedy "Vacation" which bows in theaters in July. According to an IGN report, his work in "Vacation" is what made them interested in getting him for "Ghostbusters."

Production for the movie is set to start this summer and will be released in theaters on July 22, 2016. The movie's storyline is still unknown except that in a reversal of roles, this coming team of Ghostbusters will be all female.

Ivan Reitman, who also directed and produced the 1984 "Ghostbusters" film, will be producing the upcoming film.
