'Downton Abbey' Releases Mid-Season Shocker with Blood-Soaked Dinner Party

"Downton Abbey" viewers were shocked Sunday night when a dinner party turned into a bloodbath during the ITV Studio's period drama's Episode 5.

With "Downton Abbey" right in the middle of Season 6, reported to be the ITV series' final season, viewers were treated to an unusual Episode 5 with Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham's ulcer bursting open over the food, the table cloth, and his family during dinner.

With Lord Grantham projectile vomiting across the dining room, the scene appeared more appropriate for an episode of "Game of Thrones" instead of gentle and sedate "Downton Abbey."

The intense scene, which occurred right in the middle of a Crawley family discussion about the future of a local hospital, sent British viewers and fans on Twitter to share their shock and disbelief over the gruesome dinner party, discussing the dark turn their favorite show took for Episode 5.

Fans began to compare the scene with the movie "Alien," the AMC's "The Walking Dead," and even "The Exorcist." Some even went so far as to speculate it would be an episode Quentin Tarantino would likely direct.

Fortunately, despite the copious bloody expulsion all over the table and its occupants, Crawley appeared to have endured his medical emergency. Speculations have emerged pointing towards the chances of the show's leading character surviving further episodes given the severity of his condition.

However, a teaser for the next episode in the coming Sunday following the bloody fifth episode showed Lord Grantham sitting up in his hospital bed, reassuring fans of the character.

"Downton Abbey," which has run to six seasons since it was first aired on ITV in September 2010, has garnered critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award, as well as recognition from the Guinness World Records as 2011's most critically acclaimed English-language TV series.

Despite having becoming one of the most widely watched TV drama series in the world since its third season, "Downton Abbey" has not been renewed for a seventh season.
