Free Slurpee Day 2013 At 7-Eleven Today

The unofficial birthday of 7-Eleven has arrived again this year and to celebrate, the largest convenience store chain in the U.S. is handing out free Slurpees.

Adding to the hype this year, 7-Eleven's famous deal now includes a larger free Slurpee. For the past decade, the store gave away 7.11-ounce Slurpees.

However, this year, millions of people can enjoy a complimentary 12-ounce Slurpee at 7-Eleven on Thursday.

While Free Slurpee Day benefits customers, the giveaway also has benefits for 7-Eleven. In 2011, it was reported that the chain's birthday celebrations resulted in a 4.5 million of the sweet, flavored-slush drinks making it into the hands of customers.

Furthermore, sales went up by an incredible 38 percent that year, according to USA Today.

This year, 7-Eleven's vice president of marketing and brand innovation Laura Gordon said that she expects the store to give away seven million Slurpees on Thursday- a $7.6 million value.

"It helps us reconnect with people who love the Slurpee," she said, according to USA Today.

The free Slurpees are offered at participating 7-Elevens from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time today.

7-Eleven was founded in 1927 in Dallas, Texas and became well known for their24-hour service, which began in 1962. Today, the convenience store has locations across the world, including 8,200 in the U.S. alone.

In recent years, each Free Slurpee Day has seen a barrage of posts to social media platforms honoring the icy sweet drink, and Thursday is no exception.

"Today is a glorious day, its Free Slurpee Day," wrote Twitter user Mikey.

Kacie added, "Free Slurpee Day, you already know its going to be a good day."

"I have missed Free Slurpee Day the past three years because of living in the middle of nowhere," explained Katie. "22 miles away this year!"

"It's the sugary-ist day of the year," wrote Terry.
