Google DeepMind AlphaGo AI news: Computer beats 18-time Go champion Lee Sedol 4-1

Following three straight wins that seemed to put an end to Lee Sedol's legendary track, Google DeepMind's AI program, AlphaGo, has defeated the Go player on Monday, wrapping up the match with 4 wins and 1 loss.

The first three wins snatched by the AI system proved to be very difficult for Sedol, who is known for being an 18-time world champion. As the minutes passed by and the fourth match came, Lee pushed the AI program to commit what could be the biggest mistake as it lost to the iconic Go master.

Multiple outlets then reported that the fifth and final game was the most intense as the world watched Lee lose to the program that will eventually mark the rise of advanced systems in the industry.

DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis took to Twitter to express his joy over AlphaGo's win. "#AlphaGo wins game 5! One of the most incredible games ever. To comeback from the initial big mistake against Lee Sedol was mind-blowing!!!" he said.

Engadget notes that the final game was the best among all the matches. AlphaGo made a mistake that could have cost it the last game as it did to the computer on the fourth. As expected of the highly advanced system, AlphaGo bounced back with a big blow to Lee, playing nearly error-free and taking home the victory that some experts initially thought would never happen.

The outlet further states that the program has been honored with the 9-dan rating that was given to Lee after he won the world's heart through the championships he took home.

While some think that Go's rules are simple, there is more to the black and white stones than the world believes as it takes one's logical power to beat the opponent. AlphaGo's win and Lee's loss means the $1 million prize offered by Google will all go to charity.
