'House of Cards' Season 5 News, Spoilers: Claire to Become President?
The fourth season of political drama "House of Cards," which saw Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) climb the political ladder to become a vice presidential candidate, has left fans wondering: will she rise even further and succeed Frank (Kevin Spacey), her husband, as the nation's Commander-in-Chief?
The fifth run of Netflix's "House of Cards" may still be a year away, but the Internet is already rife with speculation as to how the Underwoods will rise - or fall - in the show's latest season.
A report by MStarNews indicates that season 5 may take the spotlight away from Frank and shine it directly on Claire, crafting the entire season around the theme of female empowerment. But if such is the case, could the show also have Claire going all the way to the top of the political hierarchy, ousting Frank in the process?
As Romper noted, in the season 4 finale, Claire broke the fourth wall and turned to the camera to look straight at the viewers. Prior to that scene, only Frank had acknowledged viewers directly. The fictional U.S. president would, at times, turn to the camera and talk to the audience, with everyone around him oblivious to what he is doing.
Now, Claire has also broken down the fourth wall, which may be a foreshadowing of what's to come. Will the First Lady grow in power and replace Frank?
Meanwhile, "House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey recently spoke about how the political events in the Netflix drama/thriller parallel those in real-life American politics, saying that the show "doesn't go far enough" in terms of portraying the real-life U.S. presidential race.
In an interview with The Guardian, the actor recounted how, sometimes, after filming the Netflix series, he would "go to my hotel room and wonder 'have we gone too far ... have we crossed the Rubicon'" by showing "something unbelievable ... then I turn on the TV and watch the news ... then I think we haven't gone far enough."
When asked about his opinion on the candidates for the current race to the White House and how they compare with his character, the unscrupulous Frank Underwood, Spacey said, "We just need to remember he's [a] fictional character and that some of the candidates running appear to be fictional too."
Netflix has not announced the official release date for the fifth season of "House of Cards."
