Ice Cream Sandwich OS Receiving Flash Software By Year's End

Adobe will develop one more version of its Flash Player software for Google's upcoming Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

When the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone officially launches, the Android 4.0 operating system and its version of Flash will show up alongside it.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone is already available in the United States. These models currently do not feature the Flash player.

This smartphone is expected to arrive in Canadian territories on Dec. 7; however, no official release date has been announced for the U.S. yet.

Verizon Wireless will have a 4G LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus. It will feature a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and sport a 4.65-inch touchscreen.

Adobe spoke to PhoneScoop about Ice Cream Sandwich.

"Adobe will release one more version of the Flash Player for mobile browsing, which will provide support for Android 4.0 -- expected to be released before the end of this year,” said PhoneScoop.

The company made this announcement just as it released plans to stop developing Flash for mobile platforms.

Adobe issued a statement two weeks ago on its plans.

"Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates,” said Adobe.

From this point forward, Adobe will devote all its efforts to fixing any apparent errors and bugs for the mobile Flash application.

This means Google's next rumored operating system Android 5.0 Jelly Bean will not receive any Flash support.

This new OS is speculated to be announced at Google's next “I/O Conference.” The event will take place in April 2012.
