'Injustice 2' Gear System Combines Aesthetics With Stat Upgrades

NetherRealm Studios' crossover fighting platform "Injustice 2" is getting bigger as new characters are introduced to the growing roster. Despite the many options of who to choose, one specific fighter can be made unique to every player through the game's intriguing gear system.

In a video presentation, the gear system is illustrated as something that customizes one's hero or villain when used in combat. These gears not only change the appearance of a fighter, but also augment his stats, making one character stronger than its base form.

In order to get these pieces of gears, one way is to plunge into combat against others. At the end of a successful match, the player can get gears as loot, and by mixing and matching a myriad of combinations, one can create a fighter suited to one's play style.

While there are certain tiers for gear pieces, the highest of them all are what they call sets. Each set is unique to every character and provides dramatic boost in power, thus can be considered as the ultimate accessory in the game.

Aside from stat bonuses and appearance changes, the use of gears also enables the fighters to acquire a skill that can be used in combat. Discovery of which will be what makes the gear hunting exciting, adding more replay value for those who wish to be the best.

This isn't the first time that the gear system was unveiled and discussed. During the Game Developers' Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California, Sony Interactive Entertainment America's social media director Sid Shuman caught a glimpse of the customization schemes and described them to be one of the most in-depth mechanics in fighting genre titles.

Shuman observed that players could play with hues for the gears, combining aesthetics with efficiency. But for those who wish to just see the customized look while using only the base stats, the tournament mode allows such.

"Injustice 2" arrives on PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One platforms on May 16, 2017.
