iPhone 4S Release Date: Sprint Sees Best First Day Sales Due to iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S released on Oct. 14 and has aided the Sprint network in having its best first day of sales ever.

The company announced that it broke its record at approximately 1 p.m. ET on Friday.

“Sprint today reported its best ever day of sales in retail, web and telesales for a device family in Sprint history with the launch of iPhone 4S and iPhone 4,” Sprint product chief Fared Adib said in a statement.

“The response to this device by current and new customers has surpassed our expectations and validates our customers’ desire for a truly unlimited data pricing plan.”

The iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 are the first Apple smartphones to be carried by Sprint.

When the iPhone first released in 2008, AT&T was its U.S. exclusive carrier. Verizon acquired the iPhone in February beginning with the iPhone 4.

A total of 228 carriers worldwide carry the iPhone; 74 of those carriers were added in the last year.

Commentators expected the iPhone 4S to have an impressive first day of sales after the smartphone sold out of pre-orders in just 24 hours on Oct. 7. There were over 1 million pre-orders.

Analysts have projected that the iPhone 4S will sell 3 million handsets during its first three days of availability, beating out the iPhone 4's record of selling 1.7 million handsets during its first three days of release in June 2010.

Despite a lackluster reception during its unveiling on Oct. 4, many have quickly changed their opinion of the iPhone 4S due to its faster processor, better battery, high-resolution, 8MP camera and its primary feature, the virtual personal assistant, Siri.

Analysts expect the iPhone 4S to sell 25 million handsets during the holiday quarter, which runs through December.
