'Logan' News: 'Wonder Woman' Inspires Creation of Spin-Off to Focus on Laura

While the success of "Logan" released earlier this year is enough to warrant a spin-off, director James Mangold has revealed that it was actually the impressive critical and commercial success of "Wonder Woman" that brought him and his team to the decision to work on a project that would focus on Logan's (Hugh Jackman) daughter, Laura (Dafne Keen), also known as X-23.

There is no denying that "Logan" was not only a commercial success but critically acclaimed, too. With $616,795,600 as its worldwide gross and 93 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes, it would not have been surprising if a sequel was announced.

However, instead of a sequel, Goldman revealed in a recent interview with Heroic Hollywood that he, Jackman, and "X-Men" producer Hutch Parker had discussed a spin-off that would focus on Laura, and they are already working on the script. According to the director, the plan to make a spin-off was influenced by the success of Gal Gadot's "Wonder Woman," which is considered to be the highest-grossing summer movie this year as far as the Northern American box-office is concerned.

Patty's (Jenkins, 'Wonder Woman' director) success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there's less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, 'Well here we are with a female protagonist. That's incredible. And what are we going to do with her?' And that's where we are with that (the Laura script) right now, dreaming," Mangold said in the interview.

Parker, on the other hand, confirmed that, while the still untitled "X-23" spin-off will be an extension of the western theme that "Logan" had, the movie will cast the spotlight on the other facets of the character and may deviate from the tone and genre that "Logan" had.

"There are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe," Parker said.
