'Lucifer' Season 1 Finale News, Spoilers: Tom Ellis, Showrunner on Surprising Season Finale Reveal

Fox's new fantasy police procedural comedy/drama "Lucifer" wrapped its freshman season on Monday, April 25, with a shocking reveal about the titular character's family.

In "Take Me Back to Hell," Lucifer (Tom Ellis) was shot by Malcolm (Kevin Rankin) and left for dead. Before he took his final breath, the nightclub owner/Lord of Hell was able to use the last of his strength to speak to his father, saying that he would be "the son you always wanted me to be" in exchange for keeping Chloe (Lauren German), who Malcolm had gone after, safe.

Lucifer's appeal was granted and, later, he revealed to his brother Amenadiel (DB Woodside) that during his brief trip back home, he had been assigned a difficult mission: tracking down their mother, who had also escaped from Hell.

"I'm very proud of the fact that that was our ending," "Lucifer" showrunner Joe Henderson told TVLine.

According to the "Lucifer" boss, they were initially unsure if Fox would let them end the first season with that particular reveal, so they had prepared another version where the revelation about Lucifer's mother occurred later in season 2. But, as Henderson told the outlet, luckily, the network liked the ending and insisted that they keep it.

"Season 1 was the story of a wayward son dealing with his father issues; Season 2 is Mom," he said.

In an interview with Collider, Ellis said that the "Mom" plot was something he didn't expect, as all the talk on "Lucifer" has revolved around the antihero's father and the other angels. "The last thing you think of, in that equation, is the mother," the actor said. According to Ellis, it will be fun to play out who Lucifer's mother is, what her identity means, and how her arrival infuses the show's mythology.

"We're excited to figure out who we're going to cast because we think it's going to be a big, cool, meaty role for someone," Henderson said, adding that they're excited to find out who they can get for the role and in what direction they will take the character. As the "Lucifer" showrunner told TVLine, Lucifer's mom is not limited by the constraints of age or ethnicity.

Henderson also teased the reason for Mom's escape, saying, "Yes, there is a specific reason, and she has a very specific goal in mind."

"She's a formidable person and there's a reason that Lucifer looks afraid," he added.

"Lucifer" will return for Season 2 on Fox.
