Madonna to Perform at Her First Superbowl in 2012?

Rumor has it the Material Girl, Madonna, is in the running to perform at next year's Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5 at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Although no official comment has been released by the NFL, the rumor began circulating on the Internet early this morning.

Sports website SBNation contacted Liz Rosenberg, Madonna's agent, who only said she "could not officially confirm at this time."

Madonna famously has been linked to the Superbowl twice – once in 1998 and again in 2000, where she had to cancel last minute.

The closest she got to a Superbowl was her musical involvement in a commercial in 2008 where she was paid $10 million just to have her music featured in a commercial.

Many commentators have suggested that waiting to confirm until the ultimate last minute might be a wise move due to the previous cancelations.

Another sign pointing to Madonna possibly playing the Superbowl is her releasing a new album around the same time. Madonna has recently been linked to producers William Orbit and DJ martin Solveig and hopes to release a single by winter. The Superbowl would provide a grand stage to debut the song.

Many feel Madonna would be a welcome upgrade for the half time festivities of the game. Last season featured a very messy Black Eyed Peas with special guests Slash and Usher. Before that, were old time rockers The Who, Bruce Springsteen in 2009, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in 2008, in 2007 Prince, and before that the Rolling Stones.

Critics are also hoping the infamously wild Madonna has toned down her act since many still fear a reoccurrence of the infamous slip of Janet Jackson in 2004.
