McDonald's Employee Arrested for Spitting in Drink, Faces 20 Years Behind Bars

A fast-food restaurant employee is facing felony charges after he was caught spitting in a customer's drink.

19-year-old Marvin Washington Jr. was arrested Wednesday and was charged with malicious tampering with food, according to police in South Carolina.

Police officials state that two women pulled up to the drive through window at the McDonalds to get the sweet iced tea they had just ordered. When the tea was not as sweet as the women had wanted, they returned their beverages and asked for sweeter tea.

The women then received the new drinks and then made their way home. When they arrived home they discovered that something was not quite right with their drinks.

The customers discovered phlegm floating on the tops of their drinks when they removed the lids to add more sugar at home because the iced tea still was still not as sweet as they like it.

"They go home, pop the lids off their sweet tea to put some sugar in it and low and behold, too much of their surprise, a very large chunk of bodily fluid and phlegm in the top of their drink," a health worker told WSPA.

Greenville County investigators stated that the stores surveillance video showed that Washington leaned over the cups after he had filled two new drinks and then gave the drinks to a mother and her daughter.

The owner of the McDonald's explained that he has always followed the food safety guidelines and food safety procedures and wanted people not to draw their own conclusion until all the facts surrounding the incident come forth.

Washington was released from jail on $5,000 bond, but faces felony charges which could put Washington in prison for up to 20 years.

"If something is deliberately done to your food product it becomes a health issue," the health worker said.
