'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' Lands No. 1 Spot at Box Office (VIDEO)

Tom Cruise's latest project "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" reached the number one spot at the box office, shortly after its recent debut.

The film, which is the fourth installment in the “Mission: Impossible” series, grossed approximately $26.5 million nationwide during its first weekend, according to Mail Online.

Although the film was released on Dec. 16, it was made widely available one week later and has received commendable reviews.

Highly renowned film reviewer website Rotten Tomatoes had an average rating of 7.6/10, and an overall score of 93 percent based on hundreds of reviews.

One film critic, Susan Granger, wrote, "exhilarating, nerve-wracking, vertigo-inducing, action-packed popcorn picture, filled with spectacular feats of derring-do."

The film stars Cruise, who also helped produce the intense blockbuster, actors Jeremy Runner, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton.

It has reportedly already grossed more than $161 million worldwide, and looks likely to maintain the No. 1 spot for weeks to come due to raving reviews.

Cruise, 49, plays IMF Agent Ethan Hunt in the film which has a global terrorist bombing plot and promises to be incredibly thrilling.

The budget was reportedly $145 million, and the film topped all competing movies debuting during the Christmas day weekend.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" came in at second place, grossing approximately $17.8 million during its first weekend almost $10 million less than “Mission: Impossible 4.”

Third place saw "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked" which raked in $13.3 million.

Cruise and wife Katie Holmes recently made headlines after sources revealed that their 5-year-old daughter Suri Cruise had a $130,000 Christmas wish list.

"Suri is very mature and knows what she wants...Tom and Katie love the holidays and always go overboard … they are buying Suri absolutely everything she asks for," a source told In Touch Weekly.
