New 'Alien' Movie Latest News: Instagram Announcement, Neill Blomkamp to Direct

Neill Blomkamp is directing a new "Alien" movie. The director made the announcement via his Instagram account last Feb. 19.

The movie is said to be different from "Prometheus 2" which they are still developing with director Ridley Scott. Sources at 20th Century Fox have confirmed the news as well, according to Variety.

Blomkamp has been hinting about a new "Alien" movie in the works which was supposed to star "Alien" veteran actress Sigourney Weaver. However, he recently said that the "extra-terrestrial reboot was likely abandoned." But with this recent Instagram post, he announced: "So I think this is officially my next film."

According to a report in Wired, Blomkamp posted an illustration of a "Xenomorph," the primary antagonist in the "Alien" franchise series, which the director recognizes as main focus of the "Alien" movie.

The director is known "District 9," where he also created alien-like creatures called The Prawns. He also directed "Elysium." He is currently working on another science fiction movie "Chappie," which is about an experimental robot "built to learn and feel."

Fox reveals that Ridley Scott will produce the new "Alien" movie under his company Scot Free.

Beyond the directorship of however, 20th Century Fox has not announced who will star in the movie and whether Sigourney Weaver will come back to reprise her role.

The "Alien" franchise under Fox produced seven movies. The first movie debuted in 1979 and the last movie featuring the "Xenomorph" was in 2007, in "Alien vs. Predator: Requiem."
