New Spider-Man Reboot Casting News, Update: 4 Boys Added to Shortlist, Choice to Be Made 'Early in the Week'

Perhaps one of the most talked-about casting decisions in the entertainment realm today is the question as to who will be the next Spider-Man.

Ever since Sony and Marvel delivered the good news back in February that they will now be joining hands to bring the hero back to the big screen, names like Asa Butterfield ("Ender's Game"), Tom Holland ("The Impossible"), Nat Wolff ("The Fault in Our Stars"), Timothee Chalamet ("Insterstellar") and Liam James ("The Way, Way Back Then") are being considered to play what Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada called a teenager Peter Parker.

Some rumors even contended that Butterfield is the top choice to wear the red and blue mask. Those reports were quickly debunked, however.

The Hollywood Reporter now claims that Marvel and Sony are now "on the verge" of choosing the young actor who will play the superhero.

A "secretive, all-day screen-testing" process took place on Saturday where "six teenage boys" were tested for the coveted role, a source told the publication.

The names of Butterfield and Holland once again emerged as strong contenders but were followed by four more others. According to the media outlet, Judah Lewis ("Demolition"), Matthew Lintz (to appear in Adam Sandler's "Pixels"), Charlie Plummer ("Boardwalk Empire"), and Charlie Rowe ("Red Band Society") have entered the casting process.

The six individuals were apparently plucked out from over 1,500 boys around the world who are vying for the role.

The actors were flown to Atlanta for the tests where "Captain America: Civil War" is also currently filming. Present during the alleged tests were Kevin Feige of Marvel, Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal, as well as the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony.

THR went on to reveal that a decision is slated to be made "early in the week," however, one source hinted that Marvel could keep looking for other names if they don't like any of the given choices.

The web-slinger will be featured first in the upcoming "Civil War" movie with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron-Man/Tony Stark and Chris Evans as Captain America/Steve Rogers this May 6, 2016.

After that, Parker will potentially get his own standalone Spider-Man film in 2017.
