Oldest 4-Star General in US Army Dies Aged 98
Ralph Haines Jr., who was the U.S. Army’s oldest four-star general, has died of natural causes Wednesday. He passed away peacefully at San Antonio Military Medical Center, a spokesman from the Army has said. He was aged 98.
Haines previously served for 37 years in the Army, and held the position of vice chief of staff from 1967 to 1968.
Major Stephen Short, a spokesman for the Army said, “He was a very dedicated and patriotic leader that served his nation honorably and lived up to all its values,” according to Reuters.
Haines was well-known for his advocacy efforts to move the U.S. Army's southern headquarters from Fort Buchanan, in Puerto Rico, to Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
He leaves behind one son. His other son died in a tragic airplane crash in 2004, according to Reuters.
