'Overwatch' Seasonal Event: 'Uprising' Brings New Backstory, Skins and More

Blizzard Entertainment's team-based multiplayer first-person shooting platform, "Overwatch," is getting even better, one update after another. With its latest seasonal event, it adds not only a new mission and gameplay, but an untold story is revealed as well.

In the event trailer, the plot dates back seven years ago, in which an uprising led by a rogue group of omnics known as the Null Sector caused distress in King's Row. A group of Overwatch agents, namely Tracer, Torbjörn, Reinhardt, and Mercy, are tasked with defending the city at all costs.

With this limited time event, a unique competitive brawl awaits players, bringing an exciting theme. New themed loot boxes can also be obtained during gameplay. These will provide a bunch of goodies that players can enjoy, which includes skins, highlight intros, emotes and a whole lot more.

In a commentary, game director Jeff Kaplan revealed the inspiration to the Uprising seasonal event. He explained that this was created based on community feedback, where players enjoy holiday-based events, but would also want to experience something unique to the "Overwatch" lore.

"We've seen a lot of desire for a non-real world-related holiday event," Kaplan said. "There's also been a big desire in the community to hear more story behind 'Overwatch.'" Thus, a history event was something the developers came up with.

Kaplan also explained that this is Tracer's first mission, so this is where more lore is seen. The character is someone who knows King's Row best, thus proves to be a good asset to the team tasked to hold down the fort.

Lastly, Kaplan pointed out that "Overwatch" was conceived as a player vs. player (PvP) experience, but due to popular demand, it branches out to more artificial intelligence (AI) skirmishes. While the story is something he hopes gamers will enjoy, hopefully the gameplay is something worth noticing as well.
