Plane Crashes Near L.A. After Midair Collision With 2nd Aircraft
A plane has crashed near L.A. after a midair collision over Southern California.
Authorities have reported that one person has died in the incident following the collision, and that one plane was sent crashing into a ridge, according to The Associated Press.
The second plane was also damaged in the collision and was forced to make an emergency landing on a nearby golf course.
Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says a body has been recovered from the crashed plane. At the moment authorities believe that the one victim was the only person on board the plane at the time of the crash.
The only occupant of the crashed plane was found in the wreckage about five hours after the collision on Monday, authorities have confirmed.
The Cessna 172 plane had taken off from Santa Monica Airport to test its engine. However, it got into critical difficulties when it made contact with the other plane and crashed into mountainous region in Calabasas.
Authorities have confirmed that the plane crash also caused a small wildfire, but firefighters moved into the area and were able to extinguish the flames quickly.
The second plane was also badly damaged in the collision and during its emergency landing it was forced to do a "belly flop" landing on a fairway at Westlake Golf Course, according to AP.
That plane had three passengers on board at the time of the collision, and all survived albeit with minor injuries from the incident.
