'Power Rangers' news, cast, spoilers: Reboot going for 'Spider-Man' vibe and wants to channel John Hughes' 'The Breakfast Club'

With the news of a "Power Rangers" reboot, the 90s kids all over the world certainly felt a jolt of excitement. However, many also started to wonder how the series will transition to the movie screen, especially in a time when visual effects are no longer enough, and actual storylines are critical.

For those who have religiously followed the famous franchise, they would agree that the weekly episodes of Saban's popular action TV show were simply made for children — light plots, some sort of social lesson, and simply "evil without explanation" villains. YouTube channel "The Hashtag Show" recently tackled the reboot in its online talk show. It revealed that Saban, alongside director Dean Israelite, is trying to set the movie's tone similar to Sam Raimi's original "Spider-Man." Furthermore, having the setting in a high school timeline, channeling John Hughes' "The Breakfast Club" in the group dynamic is also highly hoped for.

For those not aware, The Breakfast Club is about a group of five teenagers with distinct personalities, forced to spend time together as detention. It is considered as one of Hughes' timeless classic films, as it shows how the group was able to come together despite their differences. This would make sense as the original five rangers are also known for living a normal life before their powers have brought them together.

According to Movie Pilot, the show Power Rangers has always been appealing to kids, and the movie remains to maintain its family-friendly stand. Although Israelite did say that it may have a bit of mature content, it doesn't seem to be going the same direction as the viral short film "Power/Rangers," which was a brutal and mature take on the series. Saban immediately cleared out any assumption that they will be following the same path.

From how Israelite describe the plot, it seems that the movie might be trying to go on a more relatable level, "I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant, and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way… So I think it's going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things."

For now, no date is set for the movie, but it can be expected around 2017.
