'Scandal' Season 5 News, Spoilers: Kerry Washington Was Kept in the Dark About Abortion Plot Twist

Actress Kerry Washington, who plays the ball-busting Olivia Pope in ABC's "Scandal," said that she wasn't informed beforehand about her character's abortion in the first half of the current season.

In an interview for her cover story in the April issue of Adweek, Washington said that though she has gotten used to the show's major plot twists, she is kept in the dark about most of them and that "Scandal" creator Shonda Rhimes rarely lets her know when something huge is about to happen to Pope.

"I had no idea that the abortion scene was coming until I turned the page at the table read and read it out loud with everybody else," the actress told the magazine.

"There are occasional moments when [Rhimes will] give me a hint about something that's coming, but it's very, very rare," she said.

Despite the constant surprises, the "Scandal" star said that she is happy to let Rhimes and her team drive the storyline and that she has no interest in becoming a producer on the show.

"It's not something that I felt was necessary," Washington explained. "Shonda and the writers are in control of that, and I show up and try to bring it to life."

Meanwhile, actress Katie Lowes, who plays professional hacker Quinn Perkins, recently gave Entertainment Weekly a preview of what will happen when Quinn next crosses paths with oil magnate/presidential candidate Hollis Doyle (Gregg Henry).

"Not good," the actress answered when asked how Quinn would react to this scenario. "I've had a completely different life because of him."

As fans know, Hollis was responsible for the death of Quinn's boyfriend and for framing her in a bid to stop Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) from becoming the next president.

According to the actress, instead of getting married, starting a family, and becoming a "cute little baby lawyer," Quinn is now a "Gladiator in a suit."

"Hollis better watch out," the actress teased.

"Scandal" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
