'Sherlock' season 4 spoilers: Special episode will air; show will become darker

At the end of the triumphant series of "Sherlock," fans were shocked when it was revealed that a certain supposedly dead character was alive.

Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott), as it turns out, faked his own death like Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) did in a previous season. Mary (Amanda Abbington) shot Sherlock in the stomach after telling him who she really is, a former intelligence officer. Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss) offered his brother an undercover job as punishment after Sherlock killed Magnussen (Lars Mikkelsen) as part of his vow to John (Martin Freeman) and Mary to always be there for them.

The imminent season will have a one episode special that will be aired before the new season. The episode will take place in the Victorian era when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the original stories. Fans will get to see Sherlock and Watson in a different look and time. And no, there will be no time traveling for the guys. The episode is, in fact, not part of the modern timeline at all.

"The special is its own thing. We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it — as we could hardly conceal — it's Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble," said showrunner Steven Moffat. He also said that Sherlock will be nicer in the old era, while Watson will be even more uptight.

Filming has started for the next season, and the producers are saying that the show will become darker than ever. Some things may or may not happen next season. John will become a father, while Molly might become Sherlock's girlfriend. Irene Adler (Laura Pulver) might join the cast and Jasmine (Yasmine Akram) will still be friends with Sherlock.

The impending season will shock the fans as something will happen to John and Sherlock that is unexpected. Moffat said that this season will be better than the last as they attempt to top it. Moffat also said that the new season will be about consequences.

Actress Amanda Abbington spoke about being parents on the show. She believes that John and Mary will be a little bit reckless, but when it comes to bullies, everything is covered.

The special episode will air this Christmas, and it has already started filming. The actual season of Sherlock will air some time in 2017.
