'Sleepy Hollow' Season 4 News, Cast, Spoilers: Fans Are Wondering If Abbie Mills Really Is Dead

Abbie Mills may not be entirely dead, according to showrunner Clifton Campbell.

"Sleepy Hollow" pulled out all the stops for its midseason finale as fans witnessed the surprising plot twist where Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie, sacrificed herself to save her sister. As Ichabod Crane, portrayed by Tom Mison, saw the explosion Abbie was in, many quickly assumed that it was impossible for her to survive. However, many are still left wondering if Abbie has indeed died or has she survived the tragedy after all.

Recently, showrunner Clifton Campbell hinted that Abbie may not have seen the end of her days just yet. In an interview with TV Line, Campbell was directly asked if Abbie is already dead. He vaguely replies with, "She makes the decision to save her sister and save Crane and what Team Witness was all about. We don't quite know where she goes."

He then adds that Abbie's fate might be a long time coming as previous signs have been pointing to it. Campbell further adds, "It's very disturbing to see her disappear in that way. The astute viewer will notice that there have been things about the tree, the lair and the story we've been telling in the first half [of the season] that will suggest what fate Abbie may have met… It's going to be very daunting and very illuminating when we all realize what happened to her." When Campbell is asked if Abbie will ever return to the series, he simply laughs and says, "Don't you want to watch and find out?"

Many speculate that Campbell's vague answers are hints of Abbie's possible comeback — sooner or later. However, it is also possible that before Abbie makes a complete return, the story may temporarily focus on Ichabod as he deals with her death.

Fans will have to wait and see if Abbie will return when the show returns on Feb. 5, 2016 on Fox.
