The PS4 will be slimmer and lighter while the PS4 Pro will have advanced 4K video capabilities. These models will pave the way for Sony's virtual reality hardware launch.

Mark the date: September 15, 2016. Sony has announced that on September 15, it will release a newer and more compact version of the PlayStation 4 gaming console. The new unit, named PS4, will be slimmer and sleeker than its predecessor.

And yet another PlayStation sibling will soon be launched with a 4K video output. The PS4 Pro will be released on November 10. The PS4 will cost $299 while the PS4 Pro will be marked at $399.

Reports said that the two consoles will have the same discs as well as game downloads, but there would be totally different features that will make each platform stand out.

The PS4–slimmer and sexier

There are a lot of leaked photos of the new PS4 and judging from these, the new Sony console looks a lot like the new Xbox One S. The PS4 is slimmer and more compact and dons a light-golden color. It is reported to be 30% smaller than its predecessor but plays the same games.

It is now easier to install a new hard drive for the PS4 since it comes with a standard 500GB as well as a 1TB version. All consoles will come with a DualShock 4 game controller, which can be connected to the unit via USB.

There is a missing optical jack at the back and the unit's fan has been redesigned to help it run cooler especially during long and intense games. Still, reports praise the PS4 for being quieter and more power efficient than other PS models. Its upright design also allows easier access to ports and will work with any room décor.

PlayStation's answer to 4K resolution gaming

PS4 Pro is PlayStation's gift to 4K resolution gamers. This is dubbed as the most advanced PlayStation model yet and aside from its 4K capability, it also has HDR capabilities. The Pro was first hinted at the E3 gaming conference; PlayStation experts called the unit Neo until it was named as the PS4 Pro.

What makes the PS4 Pro more powerful, other than its video capabilities is that it already comes with a 1TB hard drive which is already twice the size of the current PlayStation version. It can stream 4K-capable videos from Netflix and YouTube.

Some of the 4K games that the PS4 Pro supports are "Watch Dogs 2", "Mass Effect: Andromeda", "The Killing Floor", and "Deux Ex: Mankind Divided". Reps from Sony said that current and old games alike may be patched onto the system calling this process Forward Compatibility.

The PS4 and the PS4 Pro will pave the way for the launch of the PlayStation VR, Sony's virtual reality hardware, next month.
