Spotify Releases 'Stranger Things' Easter Egg Featuring 'The Upside Down'

With season 2 of "Stranger Things" debuting this week, Spotify came up with a creepy Easter egg that will send chills to Spotify users, especially those who follow the Netflix hit series.

According to The Verge, the Easter egg turns Spotify's web player that is clad in green and black colors into The Upside Down. To activate the gimmick, Spotify users simply need to open their account on their mobile device or desktop, click on the "Stranger Things" soundtrack, then sit back and wait. Soon enough, the users will enter The Upside Down, complete with its cobwebs, floating spores, and a flashlight beam.

A cool feature of the Easter egg is that whenever the user moves the browser or the mouse, the creepy setting will disappear and revert back to the old one. The report noted, however, that the gimmick only applies whenever tracks from the Netflix original sci-fi series are being played.

The Upside Down is an alternate dimension that exists in parallel to the world of humans. It features practically the same landmarks and structures found in the real world, though set in a dark, gloomy, and foggy environment. Furthermore, it is also the home of the dreaded Demogorgon.

The Easter egg is not the first of its kind pulled off by Spotify. Inverse reported that music and video streaming also came out with a Star Wars re-skin during the height of the "Rogue One" fever. The gimmick involved the progress bar, which turned into an expanding lightsaber.

Apart from the return of Eleven played by Millie Bobby Brown, another character that fans are looking forward to seeing is Will Byers, played by young actor Noach Schnapp. Back in September, "Stranger Things" co-creator Russ Duffer said in an interview with US Weekly that Byers will play a more interesting role in Season 2.

"Noah is just an incredible actor and he really didn't get a lot to do in Season 1, so we're excited about that," said Duffer. He confirmed that Byers will play a "much more sinful role." Byers spent most of season 1 trapped inside The Upside Down.
