Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows' Movie Release Date and Preview: Stephen Amell Talks Casey Jones' Evolution, Relationship With April

When "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" opens in a couple of weeks, it will bring back the beloved anthropomorphic turtles, their good friend April O'Neil (Megan Fox), and her coworker Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), along with other main cast members from 2014's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." In addition, the sequel will introduce a new hero, Casey Jones, the hockey-stick-wielding vigilante played by "Arrow" star Stephen Amell.

While viewers who have been fans of the "Ninja Turtles" since childhood can probably remember Casey Jones, who has been in the "TMNT" universe since the '80s, Amell recently explained that the Casey fans will see in "Out of the Shadows" is at the very beginning of his involvement with the anthropomorphic ninjas.

In a recent interview with SlashFilm, Amell spoke about his take on the comic book character, saying that viewers will see Casey evolve from a clean-cut good guy to a daring crime fighter in "Out of the Shadows."

"We are meeting the character at a very early part of his evolution," Amell told the website. According to the actor, when Casey first appears in the film, he is a correction officer who's still trying to get things done by the rules.

"[Y]ou're looking at a Casey Jones that tried to do it the good way and tried to live on the straight and narrow, and it just didn't work out for him," he explained. From there, Amell said that the character develops the cunning and courage that leads him to becoming the Casey fans know and love.

Speaking to IGN, Amell previewed Casey's relationships with the rest of the main characters in "Out of the Shadows." According to the actor, while Casey's relations with Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Donatello are amicable, his relationship with Raphael is a bit testy. As Amell explained, Raphael's personality naturally conflicts with Casey's personality, which should make for an interesting dynamic between the two in the upcoming film.

Amell also talked about the relationship between Casey and April, saying that while he wouldn't go so far as to call it "romantic," it is definitely a "burgeoning relationship."

"I think we saw from the trailers that he saves her from a little bit of a sticky situation, so that always incites certain feelings," he explained.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" hits theaters June 3.
