'The Fosters' Season 5B Spoilers: Series to Tackle Plight of Undocumented Immigrants
The upcoming season 5B of "The Fosters" will tackle immigration issues that reflect the ordeals of undocumented immigrants under President Donald Trump's administration.
While "The Fosters" season 5B is not expected to arrive earlier than January next year, it has been revealed that avid followers of the Freeform series can expect it will feature Callie (Maia Mitchell) and AJ (Tom Williamson) continuing to help an undocumented college student, Ximena (Lisseth Chavez).
To recall, the first half of the series' season 5 featured Ximena being tracked by the ICE. While it was Callie who wanted to help her, AJ was inadvertently brought into the situation, too. As Ximena will be stuck inside the church longer than initially thought, "The Fosters" executive producer Bradley Bredeweg revealed that it would take a while before Callie and AJ could leave the place, too.
According to Bredeweg, people behind "The Fosters" knew that immigration rights would be an issue that many undocumented immigrants would face once Trump was elected. Hence, as the show is set in San Diego, where many illegal immigrants have been arrested either from schools or in their homes, Bredeweg believes that the upcoming season 5B would be the perfect opportunity to showcase the plight of these undocumented immigrants.
"With the show set in a border town, San Diego, it was only natural to explore what is really happening with the mass amounts of people being picked up at schools and in our courtrooms and from their homes...It's having such a huge impact across the country, but especially in border towns. We couldn't deny it. We had to face it. We're a show that tackles these kinds of issues, and it just felt like the right thing to do," Bredeweg said in an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Meanwhile, it is speculated that, because of Callie's involvement in Ximena's case, AJ may get into another argument with his ex-girlfriend as he may be sick and tired of her playing hero whenever there is an opportunity. This may also be heightened by some jealousy issues as Callie's current relationship with Aaron (Elliot Fletcher) is smooth-sailing.
"The Fosters" is expected to return to Freeform for its season 5B on January 9 at 8 p.m. ET.
