"The Get Down" is set in the Bronx from the years 1977-1979. It tells a story of how hip-hop started and during the last days of the disco era. This was the time when New York City was on a financial crisis. This is also a story on the lives of the South Bronx kids and how music changed their lives and the world.

It has been a long-time project for Lhurmann which he claimed was inspired with how the hip-hop genre took people out from the brink of bankruptcy.

The show has a cast of unknown actors which Lhurmann has chosen to be part of the series. He wants to uncover new talents for the show. The upcoming series includes rapper Shameik Moore, Justice Smith of Paper Town and singer-songwriter Herizen Guardiola and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. All of them are also featured in "Baywatch" movie. Jaden who is Will Smith's son will also be included in the cast.

This show is the first for Lhurmann to venture into television. He has stated that he viewed New York in 1970 from a distance. He also added for New York to be "an amazing creative capital with very sophisticated art forms bursting forth."

The executive producer of the series is Catherine Martin who is the Oscar-winning wife of Baz Lhurmann. The producers of the show are Nas and Grandmaster Flash.

Grandmaster Flash was the one who made up the title for the series; he is also one of the hip-hop pioneers who has been featured in the show. Grandmaster Flash also refers to extending the song's break and has laid the foundation of rap.

Elliot Wheeler is teaming up with Lhurmann for the show's soundtrack. Wheeler has worked on "Strictly Ballroom" which came out in Sydney in 2014 and on the hit movie "The Great Gatsby."

There will also be a soundtrack to be released for the series "The Get Down" and it will come out together with the premiere of the first episode.
