'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7 News, Spoilers: EP Speaks Up About Show's Possible End

On Sunday, April 10, "The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder shocked fans when he said that the popular supernatural drama will air one last season, its eighth, before going off the air for good.

Speaking from the Walker Stalker Con in Nashville, the actor told fans, as reported by the convention's official Twitter account, "We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice."

Following Somerhalder's statement, The CW informed media outlets that "no decision has been made" regarding the show's future beyond season 8.

So is "The Vampire Diaries" bidding its fans a final farewell or not?

A recent interview with "TVD" executive producer Julie Plec may shed some light on the issue. Speaking to TVLine before Somerhalder made his comment about the show's impending end, Plec said, "I'm going to be dead honest with you: I was so happy to get Season 8 that even the idea of Season 9 is so far away — I haven't even started thinking about it."

According to the "Vampire Diaries" creator, she is aware that Kat Graham, one of the show's stars, has made her announcement about leaving the show after season 8, but that she is welcome to stay for as long as she wants.

"Every time we enter a new season, we think, 'There's no more story to tell. We're done,'" Plec explained. As the "Vampire Diaries" boss told TVLine, it won't be until she and the show's writers and producers begin breaking season 8 in May that they will get a sense of where they are with the characters and how much they still have left in the show.

"We won't know until we really start talking about it creatively," she said.

"The Vampire Diaries" is currently nearing the end of its seventh season, the finale of which airs in May. Though The CW has said that it has not made a decision about the show's end, Somerhalder's comment and Graham's recent announcement, along with the season 6 departures of stars Nina Dobrev and Michael Trevino, have left fans speculating that the show really is getting ready to say goodbye.

In the next episode of "The Vampire Diaries," Damon (Somerhalder) and Alaric (Matt Davis) travel to Memphis to capture an escaped vampire and Bonnie (Graham) learns a bit more about why the Armory is after her.

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
