Torii Hunter's Son Arrested in Connection With Sexual Assault of Child

Torii Hunter of the Los Angeles Angels has been placed on indefinite leave after his 17-year-old son was arrested in Texas.

Police in Prosper, Texas, issued a statement regarding the arrest of Darius McClinton-Hunter Monday in connection with a sexual assault case.

The statement described that Hunter was one of five arrested following an investigation of the sexual assault of a child that ended after several weeks. The charge is classified as a second-degree felony.

Angel's manager Mike Scioscia said Hunter had left the team, but did not speculate as to when Hunter may return to the team.

"It's a personal matter," Scioscia said. "We're going to go day-to-day, and we'll just see where it is. That's all I'm going to say."

Hunter was on the team plane Sunday night as the team flew back to California after a game with the Texas Rangers.

On Twitter, Hunter posted his gratitude for the support and prayers that he has received.

"This is very tough for a father," Hunter tweeted. "Thanks for ur prayers and support. Be Blessed everyone."

Reports indicate that Hunter left the team's facilities several hours before a Monday night game against the Oakland Athletics.

Hunter sat out Sunday's game, but would have been in the Angels' lineup Monday night, Scioscia said. Mark Trumbo took Hunter's spot in right field for the second straight night.

Todd Shapiro, Hunter's lawyer, told reporters Monday: "They're devastated. Everybody's very upset. He's got a very bright future ... still does. He's a very good student, a very good athlete."

The 36-year-old Hunter is a four-time All-Star and a 9-time Gold Glove winner. He has been in a slump recently, batting only .256 with five homers and 15 RBIs this season. He has managed just two hits in his last 31 at-bats over the last nine games.
