'Transformers: The Last Knight' Delves Into History of Transformers

For several installments, the Transformers franchise has always been characterized as a saga of films filled with cinematic fluff but somehow lacking in meat. In the upcoming "Transformers: The Last Knight," however, it seems that the folks behind the movie will aim to dispel that notion as history is given a second glance.

In a short clip containing a microfiche of iconic human exploits in the past, the giant humanoid robots are seen in the background, as if subtly shaping the future. Anthony Hopkins, who plays the English lord Sir Edmund Burton, narrates that they've been kept as a secret for a long time.

This was immediately followed up by a teaser, showing how man has been in constant battle with himself and others for many years, whether in the early ages or in modern times. What's even more interesting is how it hints at a new trailer arriving on Wednesday, April 12.

What will it potentially reveal? For one thing, obviously it will give a morsel of thought as to the role of the Transformers in human history. They have appeared in certain points where there is war and chaos, and so will this be the key to finding a beacon of light to save the Earth? That may be a spoiler, but one can expect at least a slight idea.

As far as the visual spectacle is concerned, that will remain to be there. A featurette shows director Michael Bay working with two cameras simultaneously to produce a native 3D experience. Coupled with IMAX, it is promising to be yet another doozy in terms of effects and believability.

He again mentioned in the featurette that this is going to be his last Transformers film, though there are reasons to believe it may only be a bluff. Gizmodo has compiled instances where Bay said he was leaving the franchise, only to see him return to make another one. Only time will tell if he is serious this time around.

"Transformers: The Last Knight" will be rolling out in cinemas on June 23, 2017.
