Fans of Stephen King's horror mystery series "Under the Dome" won't be seeing Season 4 after CBS cancelled the show.

CBS' "Under the Dome" will air its Season 3 finale on Thursday and it will serve as the last episode of the horror mystery series, after the network cancelled the show.

Based on best-selling horror author Stephen King's book of the same title, "Under the Dome" initially premiered on June 2013, receiving positive reviews and garnering a 13 million-strong audience.

The show was an instant hit during the summer it launched and was an instant hit with audiences, with its highly-rated script making it an original summer programming choice.

However, by August of the same year, the show was reported to have declined sharply, with Season 2 getting 7.52 million viewers, while Season 3's average for 12 episodes put it at only 4.22 million viewers.

The decline in the show's popularity has been blamed on the series' script going off the rails on the original book's plotline and the emergence of story modifications based on the writers re-imagining the origins of the Dome itself.

"Under the Dome" revolves around the residents of the fictional town of Chester Mills who find themselves suddenly trapped under an indestructible Dome which separates them from the rest of the world.

The story follows Chester Mills' residents as they struggle to find food and other essentials in an environment presenting diminishing resources, while the government, military forces, and the media stand by outside attempting to break the Dome down, and try to contact the Chester Mills community in the absence of the Internet, mobile signals and limited radio communication within.

The series starred Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Natalie Martinez, Brit Robertson, Alexander Koch and Colin Ford.

It is expected to air its Season 3 finale on September 10, representing the end of the show.
