'Vampire Diaries' Season 8 Spoilers: Who Is Returning? Could It Be Elena?

After the shocking finale of the hit series "The Vampire Diaries" season 7, there has been a lot of anticipation for the return of Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev.

Why It Is Possible That She Will Return?

The finale of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 teased the return of Elena when Damon, played by Ian Somerhalder, heard her voice. Though Dobrev left the series last season, fans are hoping her character will make an appearance in the new season . It was reported that the voice they used was newly recorded, unlike the material used earlier in the season.

Because of this, fans are hoping that Dobrev's willingness to give new material to the show means that she will return for season 8. The executive producer of the series, Julie Plec, spoke to TV Line about the matter. She said, "In this particular case, she came in and did the ADR, [short for automated dialogue replacement]. I reached out and said, 'We can either cobble it together from a bunch of episodes, or you can come in and see everybody and do ADR. She chose to do it in person, which was great, because it was a nice little personal Nina visit."

This Might Mean It Is The Series Finale

Although her return to the series is a happy moment for fans, it could also mean that season 8 will be the finale season of the series. This is due to the comment of Plec in previous reports, where she revealed that they will do all they can to bring Elena back when the series ends.

She said, "It's what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it's what I've got in my head. Obviously things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to."

However, Plec also emphasized that Dobrev was persistent in leaving the show, as she hopes to explore a new side to her career.
