'Veep' season 5 spoilers: Will Selina become the new president?

Season 4 of "Veep" ended shrouded with doubt as Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Bill O'Brien (Brad Leland) are tied in the highly contested presidential elections. On which party gets majority in the House of Representatives, it is still too close to call.

This leaves the viewers with a situation that is unprecedented in American politics. In the case of an Electoral College tie, the House of Representatives get to elect the next president with each state getting one vote. What makes this situation even more interesting is that the senate is the one who gets to choose the vice president. In some convoluted way, this means there's a possibility that Tom James (played by the fantastic Hugh Laurie of "House") might get to be the president.

The first episode of the new season will take place in the morning after the long election, where we will see how Selina and the rest of her staff deal with this extremely unattractive outcome.

The imaginative creator of the series, Armando Iannucci, left the show for personal reasons when the last season wrapped up. He has handed the helm to the ingenious new showrunner David Mandel, who takes on the upcoming season.

The hit series is critically acclaimed for its stellar cast-winning awards for the work they do on the show. Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won three consecutive primetime Emmys for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series, while the show has been nominated for Best Comedy three years in a row. Actor Tony Hale also won a primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

The show is one of the few comedy shows to win awards from both the Screen Actors Guild and the Writer's Guild of America in the same year since the year 2000. It joins the great comedy lineup of "The Office," "30 Rock," and "Modern Family."

The show has been raking in nominations and ratings since it first aired. However, it remains to be seen if the new showrunner can maintain the political clout and standard that the show is known for. Fans will be around no matter what happens next season.

Actor Tony Hale, who plays Gary, Selina's bag man, spoke about the upcoming season following his Emmy win. "It's funny because I don't feel like the writers are very swayed by that," he told reporters. "In the past experiences it's been that they've written something and then it's actually happened in the press. So I'm worried about what they're going to write and then it actually happening. That's what I'm more worried about, because the show is satire, but sometimes satire turns to life," he said.

The show is set to return some time next year.
