The false choice Christian parents face during pride month

Each June, many Christian parents find themselves carrying a weight that few people fully understand.
As pride month unfolds, conversations surrounding sexuality and identity become increasingly visible in schools, workplaces, social media, entertainment, and public life. For parents whose son or daughter identifies as LGBT, the month can stir a complicated mix of emotions: grief, confusion, fear, love, concern, hope, and sometimes profound loneliness.
Many parents feel caught between two realities.
On one hand, they desire to remain faithful to their biblical convictions. On the other hand, they deeply love their child and long to preserve a meaningful relationship. Too often, these parents are portrayed as having only two options: abandon their convictions or abandon their child.
But that is a false choice.
1. Christ’s call: Truth and love
Jesus Himself embodied perfect grace and truth. For parents navigating difficult family dynamics, the challenge is not choosing one over the other but learning how to walk faithfully in both.
2. Parents need an anchor, not a battle
Fear has a way of convincing us that every conversation is an emergency and every disagreement is a crisis. Don’t panic. Panic pushes parents toward reactions they later regret. Faithfulness begins by remembering that God is not surprised by our child's choices, questions, or journey.
3. Stay in prayer instead of control
Many parents carry burdens God never asked them to carry. We cannot change hearts. We cannot force outcomes. We cannot orchestrate another person's spiritual journey. What we can do is remain prayerful, dependent, and surrendered to the one who loves our children even more than we do.
5. Remain connected to the One who changes hearts
Prayer not only keeps us anchored to Jesus, but it also helps us stay connected to the people we love. Connection often creates opportunities that arguments never can.
6. Keep relationships where possible
Too often, relationships become casualties when fear takes over. While healthy boundaries may be necessary, parents should resist the temptation to withdraw love, affection, or presence. A strong relationship does not require agreement; it requires intentional care.
7. Let Jesus disciple your heart, not the media
Culture is constantly discipling us. News cycles, social media, commentators, and online debates all compete for our attention. Christian parents must be careful not to allow culture — whether secular or religious — to shape their emotional responses more than God's Word shapes their hearts. Stay rooted in Scripture. Scripture provides both conviction and compassion, truth and humility.
8. Humility breaks pride
God often does His deepest work when humility and dependence on Jesus shape our hearts. Humility also transforms the way we communicate — and the way we communicate matters. Even when convictions remain unchanged, watch your tone. Parents often underestimate how much their tone affects whether a child feels safe enough to continue a conversation. Gentleness does not mean you are compromising. Kindness is not surrender. Respectful communication reflects the character of Christ.
9. Grieve honestly
Some parents feel guilty acknowledging their pain. Yet grief is not evidence of a lack of love, faith, or hope. In many cases, grief reflects the gap between expectations and reality. Bringing that sorrow honestly before God creates space for healing, wisdom, and deeper dependence on Him.
10. Finally, remember that God loves your child more than you can imagine
This may be the most important anchor of all. Parents often carry a sense of responsibility that slowly morphs into ownership. But our children ultimately belong to God. His pursuit is more relentless, His wisdom more perfect, and His love more complete than our own. The story is never solely about what a parent can do. It is about what God continues to do.
11. Faithfulness is staying close to Jesus and remaining rooted in Scripture
As June starts, Christian parents need reminders that faithfulness is not measured by panic, pressure, or perfect outcomes. Faithfulness looks like walking humbly, loving deeply, and trusting God with what remains beyond our control.
The Gospel is still powerful. The Holy Spirit is still at work, and Jesus is still drawing people to Himself.
For parents walking this road, Jesus Christ remains the anchor that holds when emotions surge, relationships strain, and outcomes remain uncertain.
Keep abiding. Keep trusting. Keep faithfully re-presenting Jesus to the child you love.
