Employees of a school district in Maryland have been accused of viewpoint discrimination for censoring and limiting the speech of a religious group on school grounds.
The Christian legal group Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) sent a letter to the Montgomery County school board on Monday to address the issue, stating that religious group Parents and Friends of Gays and Ex-Gays (PFOX) have a right to hand out materials to students on campus.
This is the same county that is currently in heated debate with parents over a new pro-homosexual sexual education curriculum that was recently passed.
“Christian groups should not be treated as second-class. Indeed, they cannot be under the school district’s own policy,” explained David Cortman, Senior Legal Counsel for ADF, in a statement. “School officials do not have the right to engage in censorship of viewpoints they don’t like. The board has a policy permitting the distribution of literature by outside organizations and community groups, and it is unconstitutional then for district employees to single out certain organizations for censorship.”
For some time now, PFOX has been distributing Christian information to students within the Montgomery County school district. Their efforts have recently increased over opposition to a pro-gay sex-ed health program that the county school board approved in the beginning of July.
Several faculty in the district have strong feelings against PFOX, however, and have tried to stop the group from distributing their literature. Angry emails have been sent to the group telling them to not to set foot on campus.
“Stay out of our schools and leave our children alone!” wrote one teacher from Wootton High School in Rockville, Md. “[Your group] is like the KKK but only in the form of religion.”
Employees at Winston Churchill High School located in Potomac, Md., went so far as to place the PFOX’s name on its trash cans and encouraged students to place the fliers in the receptacle.
Attorneys from ADF have explained that this kind of behavior is viewpoint discrimination, however, since the school allows other non-profit groups to hand out literature to its students. Two different cases towards the Maryland school district by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit have solidified this First Amendment Right of religious speech, they argue.
The lawyers have noted in the letter that if the Montgomery County school board does not act to stop the opposing actions, they will recommend PFOX to file a civil legal lawsuit against the board.
The Montgomery County school officials are already in an argument with local families and pro-family groups after it passed a pro-homosexual sex-ed curriculum that would force eighth and tenth graders to learn about altered sexual orientations and acceptance of alternative lifestyles. It would also have a DVD on the correct use of a condom for the sophomores.
Several groups are contemplating filing a federal lawsuit to challenge the school board’s passing of the curriculum, noting that parents should have the final say in their children’s upbringing. They do not feel that they “must bend to the State's duty to educate its citizens,” as county school officials argued.
“The school is not only engaging in unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination, but clearly it has also displayed an obvious desire to indoctrinate students with a radical, pro-homosexual agenda,” concluded Jeremy Tedesco, the ADF Legal Counsel who wrote the letter to the school board, in a statement. “Montgomery County children deserve a better education than this.”

Your inclusion of the extra Romans is certainly on target and a good reminder. I would also add that discernment is not the same as judging. Judging an adulterer or pornographer is not the same as stating the fact that it is adultery or pornography and is proscribed by His word.
Only God has the answer for your situation. Both the OT and NT proscribe homosexual behavior along with many other sexual sins. That of course does not mean people don't do it anyway but that is very different than getting into the trap of twisting His word to fit our circumstances.
Jesus said us that God never calls us to anything that is against His own word.
On the issue of homosexuality, The Word of God is very clear, It is a sin. We can't change that no matter how hard some try. And every Christian has a duty as a child of God to declare the truth on this matter.
But at the same time it must be done in Love. God hates sin but he Loves the sinner, And if that sinner does not repent and turn from that sin to God they will be judged by God for that sin.
But there are some who claim to be Christian who would give the impression that God hates the sinner. If that were the case who would be saved.? Not you, and not me.
Please, while you declare the truth of Gods Word, Don't forget to declare it in the Love of Christ. As Christians we are to" judge" the actions and lifestyles of the world, and of those who claim to be Christian. I do have a right to judge the words and statements people make.
I do have the right to judge what is being preached today as the word of God. I do have the right to judge the homosexual lifestyle. To say that we are not to make any judgements at all is not correct.
May God help us all to be more like Jesus, There is room for much improvement in my life, And I suspect in yours too. Art.
Personally, for me, when it comes to matters of disagreement - whether over salvation through Christ, homosexuality, evolution, or whatever - I keep in mind 1 Peter 3:15, which states:
"But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect ..."
But to be honest, we don't always say things in the right way - whether they be the right things or not and wheter we have the right intention or not. That's a human flaw, not just a Christian flaw. When Christians speak maliciously, they do so not as Christians but as the sinful beings that we are. And to be honest, even I cringe at the words spoken by some who claim to be believers. I hope before all the other laws and commands in the Bible, all fellow believers can put the greatest commandments above all - Matthew 22:38-40.
I've been through the ex-gay ministry and even though I tried hard and really believed God would be faithful, my orientation stayed very much the same. Through months of pain, confusion and seeking I learned a good bit of what the Bible truly says of homosexuality (which isn't much), how people during the time that it was written viewed sex and relationships, and also how our own Western mindset has really formed an intollerant belief towards something, that may not be the intention, is still very much here and real and I truly believe can be lived out righteously and life giving towards the kingdom.
I still know many in the exgay ministries who have successfully changed their orientation and are happy, I don't deny that they are real experiences and I am not against their views, but I know that's not my way or my calling.
I'm not here to debate any of that, or to debate views of the Bible. It's very useless at this point in the "war." I'm here to tell you that what I strive for, what we all should strive for to love God and to love others with everything we have...not because they're something to "get saved," but because they are loved by God. So I hope we as Christians can one day put down our megaphones of hatred and dogmatic hypocracies and come together and usher in this Kingdom, releasing the hell that people that don't know Jesus are living in day in and day out...
Unfortunately the best part of the Romans 1 chapter was cut off by a "2" in which the second chapter really finishes the subject of the first by Paul stating: "1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?"
Homosexuality is a demonic lifestyle that destroys the family, manhood, womanhood, and childhood in order to mock at God's divine order and destroy the future generations of humanity. The glorious history of the homosexual has left nations less populated, sicker, and emotionally and financially drained. Even the vast majority of their leaders per capita have fought hard the preserve the STD curse on the earth, while taking pleasure in destroying the minds of children with despicable acts of lewdness and molestation.
Christians are getting treated pretty harshly these days as well.
