Zondervan's Bible Across America tour will stop in 90 cities to allow over 31,000 Americans to handwrite a verse in their next NIV Bible edition.

Commemorating the 30th anniversary of the popular New International Version translation, Zondervan is traveling to 90 cities in 44 states to allow the American people to write a verse in the new NIV Bible.

The ambitious Bible Across America tour kicked off Tuesday from Zondervan headquarters in Grand Rapids, Mich., and will make stops at special events, churches, universities, retail stores and U.S. landmarks. The tour takes shape in the form of a 42-foot luxury motorhome, donated by Spartan Motors, which will be driven more than 15,000 miles by a team of four over the next five months.

"The Bible is America's favorite book of all time. And because of its accuracy, clarity and literary quality, the NIV has become the most successful Bible translation of all time," said Moe Girkins, president and CEO of Zondervan, in a released statement. "We believe that a completely handwritten version of the NIV Bible by people from all across our country will help America rediscover the Bible in a fresh, new way."

"The Bible Across America is a symbol of Zondervan's commitment to make the Word of God more accessible and more relevant to more people," he continued. "We couldn't think of a better way to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the NIV Bible than by inviting Americans to join us on this monumental tour and open more hearts to the Word of God."

According to Zondervan, more people use an NIV Bible than any other English-language translation and there are more than 300 million copies in print worldwide.

The collection of handwritten verses, each written by 31,173 contributors on actual thin-stock Bible paper, will be published as a complete America's NIV Bible and sold in stores nationwide next year. While most verses will be written by regular American people, Zondervan hopes to collect a few from President Bush, the Rev. Billy Graham and others, according to The Associated Press.

The Michigan-based publisher plans to create two original editions, one of which will be offered to the Smithsonian Institution. The other edition will be auctioned off to benefit the International Bible Society, which owns the copyright to the NIV.

The tour stops in Detroit on Wednesday and will conclude in San Diego on Feb. 12, 2009.

I believe what he meant is that Zondervan is owned by the same company, HarperCollins, that publishes the Satanic Bible.

I think he means they also publish the book that the "Church Of Satan" uses. If you didnt already know, it does exist, pretty messed up i agree. From what I have heard many Satanists actualy dont really believe in Satan or God but rather use the title "Satanist" as a way to offend people as they embrace particularly sinful lifstyles. But yes, one can actualy find what they call the Satanic Bible in almost any popular bookstore chain accross america and i belive this is the book he was referring to. Its right there with the books on witchcraft, new age, astrology, and other detestible literature.

pinochos, my sense is aliveinChrist is either a KJV only person or believes the KJV should be the more prefered version of the Bible.

Whether the KJV or NIV...are people OBEYING THE WORD OF GOD??
That's the more important question...JESUS summed it up: to love the LORD our God with all our hearts, minds, strength, and souls...and our neighbor as ourselves....it is all about relationship to the Father, Son, Holy Spirit and walking in love...when you know the love of God and know that nothing can separate you from that love...that makes all the difference...then obeying our loving Father (and yes HE is also going to discipline us all in love) is not hard at all! Let's try obeying the Word, not getting upset over what version somebody reads!!!
JESUS is preached!!! The GOSPEL is going out!!! praise GOD!

does anyone happen to realize that Zondervan also prints the Satanic bible? hmmm, something to think about!!! is it any surprise that they have made a point to separate christians through confusion over all the different versions..........................not just this company...........some others as well, but where out treasures lie there also are our hearts........... and I am sorry, but the KJV is not hard to understand. It is actually on a lower reading level that any other version.

(KJV) "...and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

    (NIV) (omitted)

Compare these passages and determine for yourself whether the NIV is a good or poor translation â

KJV also has a few typos. If KJV was the only bible, the majority of christian youth today would never be able to be saved. One may as well expect Spanish, Chineese, and all other langueges to read it. KJV is a good solid bible, dont get me wrong, but theres no perfect translation out there thats the only one.

Well, they own the copyright to NIV so they can do this if they want to... although I don't agree with it.

By the way, no translation is perfect. The only text that is infallible is the ORIGINAL TEXT, not the KJV, NIV, NRSV or any other acronym you want to add. Before you go bashing translations, please have a basic understanding of translation. In other words, not all languages have the same words, thus even the KJV ADDS TEXT to the Bible (technically speaking) in order to translate what is being said.

Just more demonstation of greed and lust for 'filthy lucre' by Zondervan. Won't they ever stop?

Mark my words. Someone famous will get to write John 3:16. I wonder who will get to write such inspiring verses as Genesis 10:16?
"And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite".
