Survey: More Americans Adopting Pro-Life Perspective

By Lawrence D. Jones|Christian Post Reporter

Americans are continuing to move toward a more pro-life perspective on abortion, according to the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization, which recently conducted a survey on the divisive issue.

Though around half of Americans still prefer to identify themselves as “pro-choice” over “pro-life,” the Knights of Columbus – in partnership with the Marist Institute for Public Opinion – found that 86 percent of those surveyed said they would significantly restrict abortion, 79 percent support conscience exemptions on abortion for health care workers, and 80 percent believe that laws can protect both the health of the woman and the life of the unborn.

Additionally, the data from the recent survey showed that since October nearly every demographic sub-group had moved toward the pro-life position except for non-practicing Catholics and men under 45 years of age.

“The data shows that the American people are placing an ever increasing value on human life,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Far from the great divide that most people think exists when it comes to the abortion debate, there is actually a great deal of common ground.”

In terms of the labels themselves, the survey still found Americans to be largely divided, with 49 percent of those surveyed identifying themselves as pro-life and 48 percent identifying themselves as pro-choice. But the latest figures mark a significant growth for the pro-life movement as only 44 percent of those surveyed in October said they were pro-life while 50 percent said they were pro-choice.

Furthermore, of the 82 percent of Americans who believe abortion should be legal, more than half believe it should be legal only in a few circumstances. Only 23 percent of those surveyed said they believe abortion should be legal under any circumstance – as the Supreme Court had ruled in the infamous Roe v. Wade case back in 1973.

“Most Americans are unhappy with the unrestricted access to abortion that is the legacy of Roe vs. Wade, and pundits and elected leaders should take note of the fact that agreement on abortion need not be limited to the fringes of the debate and issues like adoption or pre-natal care,” commented Anderson.

“The American people have reached a basic consensus, and that consensus is at odds with the unrestricted access to abortion that is the legacy of Roe,” he concluded.

The survey by the Knights of Columbus and Marist was conducted May 28 – 31 on 1,223 Americans and has a margin of error of +/-3 percent.

Another survey conducted around the same time by the Gallup organization found that over half (51 percent) of Americans stand for the sanctity of human life while 42 percent consider themselves pro-choice.

It marked the first time since Gallup began asking the abortion question in 1995 that a majority of U.S. adults identified themselves as pro-life. In 1995, only 33 percent called themselves pro-life.

By the way, a great movie that wrestles with the abortion issue (and more) is "JUNO" -- whatever your views on the topic, see this movie (cool music, too).

Rhi Bran, just read your post re Obama meeting the Pope and the hypocrisy of the Catholic Right. You are the wisest voice on these message boards! Cheers to you! Your post below is right on as well: most people are reasonable, and seek a way to lessen abortion through education rather than extremism.

Food for thought: If Roe were ever overturned (doubtful, but anything is possible) it would be the end of the Republican Party in national electoral politics. They're becoming an extremist, regional party as it is, the end of Roe would just seal their marginalization.

But a lot of these pro-lifers do not want to overturn Roe, supported Obama, and like his call for reasonable dialogue on ways to lower the number of abortions. They are not lining up to join Operation Rescue and its more radical spin offs.

This is a very nice example of spin and what surveyors call "Garbage In - Gospel Out". Two examples:

    1. "found that 86 percent of those surveyed said they would significantly restrict abortion," This is pure spin. Rather, they should report that only 12% support the pro-life and Catholic position of 'abortion should never be permitted under any circumstance.' So much for being "pro-life".

    2. "79 percent support conscience exemptions on abortion for health care workers," The question asked was: "Do you think health care workers such as doctors and nurses who believe abortion is wrong should be required to perform them, or not?" This is GIGO. Rather, to be relevant to the actual issues, the questions that should have been asked are:
    1. Do you think your doctor or nurse has the right to refuse to prescribe, or refer you to someone who will, birth control pills, because they believe birth control pills constitute an abortion?
    2. Do you think you pharmacist has the right to refuse to fill your legal prescription for birth control pills or to dispense emergency birth control - like Plan B - because they believe birth control pills constitute an abortion?
    3. Do you think your doctor or nurse, because of their religious beliefs, has the right to refuse to refer you to a physician or service that provides abortion?

If these questions had been asked, this issue would, I strongly suspect, be seen in a much different light.

Flagged as inappropriate. show Chdidry, I quote your post what is amazing to me is that 80% of Americans call themselves Christians. There is a huge discrepancy there. How can someone who calls themselves Christians support the veiws of the left wing is astonishing to me. They CALL themselves Christians, but they aren't and don't want to be by your standards. Deists maybe but the fundamental, inerrant word of God is not what these people believe. They are why NON-BELIEVER is such a fast growing segment of the population. When torn between the restrictive Puritan Calvinist and the Heathen most today will choose heathen. Look to England between the world wars and you would see the same. Growing numbers of Rationalists, falling Church attendance and formal membership, increasing fragmentation among the Believers' sects. I go to GB often and I have observed the number of closed churches. This survey results story also doesn't track the fact that 77% of Americans would allow SOME form of abortions. It does say only 23% would totally ban. Do the math, that makes the majority support some form of pregnancy termination. You also must know that abortion providers are seeing an increase in service demands due To economy. To many being PRO-LIFE does not mean being completely anti-abortion. IT'S MORE A STATEMENT OF PREFERENCE rather than a holy command. hide

And may this grassroots viewpoint continue to grow into real hope for change in our leadership. Lord, let those who lead lead according to Your views, amen.

The motivation behind 95% of abortions is because of selfish desires. Most pregnancies that lead to abortion are out of wedlock. Morality in this country is in a fast decline and that is the reason we are having discussions on this matter. God must be put back into our foundation and in our family's before these murder's will stop. More Americans adopting prolife perspective is wonderful news but what is amazing to me is that 80% of Americans call themselves Christians. There is a huge discrepancy there. How can someone who calls themselves Christians support the veiws of the left wing is astonishing to me.

Diana, I understand what your saying, but babies have to be born and live in order to hear the gospel.

And if they don't have Christ, they are still going to HELL. Pro-life according the dictates of America, is not true PRO-LIFE according to God, nor will it save anyone.

    Preach the Gospel!!!
